THINGS THAT FIZZ, BUZZ, BEEP, ZOOM AND SQUELCH: science is for everyone.
College and primary schools partner up for science
Primary School students across the greater Hobart region will be taking part in a science extravaganza at Elizabeth College in August. With the STEM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics recognised as critical learning areas, the week-long workshops are hosted by teachers and students across the college and are aimed at sparking young peoples’ excitement about our world and the positive contributions they can make to its future.
“Our theme this year is ‘STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) gives Earth a future.’ We want to get all students excited about these crucial subjects early in their schooling,” said Head of Learning Area, Deborah Beswick. “The younger students love learning alongside the older ones and these young people are part of the next generation that will become the future leaders of our scientific and technological advancement.”
The workshops cater for Kindergarten to Year 6, with creative explorations of life under the sea, zoo animals and the always popular ‘journey into powder, slimes gasses and smells’ for the littlest conference delegates. Upper primary students will be getting their hands dirty with brain dissections, pulling apart engines in the automotive workshop, testing their hand-eye coordination soldering electronic circuits and using principles of genetics to make their own creatures. The sports fans can test their own fitness like the AFL players, or design their own balloon powered dragster, while the techies can learn to customise a computer program in ‘Pimp my Prog’ – and there will be plenty of Harry Potter magic on show in the colourful, fizzing chemical reactions demonstration.

We are trialing a new system with texts (SMS) for attendance for Term 3. We will send you a text before 11am each day to let you know if your son or daughter is not in class. This will allow you to be fully informed of your child’s attendance in classes. We hope that this means we can work together more closely to ensure your son or daughter attends classes.
Please note, that if you wish to respond to the text that we can only receive replies back to that number within 48 hours.
